What really matters in practice

What matters is rarely the „whether,“ but rather the clean execution according to EDB logic. First, the bank question: Which funds are proven how, and at what point in the process. Next, document quality: certificate of good conduct, translations, medical check, complete, on time, in a form that raises no questions during the appointment with the originals. Depending on the document and country of origin, an apostille or legalization may also be required. And finally, timing: The Approval-in-Principle phase and the subsequent in-person appointment with EDB are two distinct steps. Anyone who confuses the two creates subsequent submissions, unnecessary delays, and avoidable loops.

Free initial consultation: EDB classification of your case

My experience – Your advantage

In the free initial consultation, we will assess your case: what applies to you according to EDB guidelines, which documents are critical, and which next steps make sense.

This is how we process your application
through NELS up to the AIP

Procedure: NELS → AIP → Appointment → Residence Permit

We will process your application via NELS up to the Approval in Principle (AIP). The final phase will then be completed on site – including the appointment and submission of the originals. You remain the applicant throughout; we handle the structure, preparation, and clean submission.

Our litigation (compact, direct)

1. NELS Setup and clear structure of the case

2. Pre-AIP Documents: Collection, Review, Structured Upload

3. AIP Examination: Questions are answered clearly (if necessary)

4. Post-AIP Documents: Bank statements Mauritius and Medical Health Check

5. Appointment preparation: Originals complete, organized, plausible

6. Fees and finalization according to the procedural status

Document logic: What EDB/NELS typically requires

The EDB does not evaluate „a lot of paper,“ but rather clear evidence in the correct phase. This is why we consistently separate Pre-AIP, Post-AIP and Extension. The overview below is a guide; in the free initial consultation, we will tailor it to your case and determine the sequence.

Phase 1: Pre-AIP (Upload via NELS)

  • Birth certificate (English/French or certified translation)
  • Passport (data page)
  • Certificate of Conduct (or equivalent certificate): last 10 years, not older than 6 months
  • 3 digital passport photos: 3.5 × 4.5 cm (413 × 531 px), no older than 6 months
  • Signed declaration („Undertaking“)
  • Copy of other residence permits (if applicable)
  • Capital/Financial proof in accordance with EDB requirements (depending on the form of proof)
  • Marriage or divorce certificate (if relevant; if applicable English/French or certified translation)

Phase 2: Post-AIP (additional documents)

  • bank statement from a Mauritian bank
  • Medical health check: certificate + findings, not older than 6 months
  • Pages with the latest entry/visa stamps (if any)
  • Deadline: Submit originals complete and in order

Extension (later)

  • Certificate of good conduct from Mauritius for the last 3 years, not older than 6 months
  • bank statement from a Mauritian bank
  • Passport photos, copy of the residence permit, signed declaration („Undertaking“)

Video Briefing: Mauritius Retiree Visa 2026

My short video: Retirement Visa 2026 in 9 minutes (for decision-makers)

This short video is a compact briefing. No theory, no repetitions. You get the points that determine whether things run smoothly in practice:

▸ the three typical causes of delays in the EDB process
▸ the criteria in a comprehensible logic (not as a list)
▸ the correct order for proof of bank funds and document management – so you don't create loops

Family and general conditions: what you should know in advance

Mauritius allows family reunification. Under certain conditions, family members can apply for a residence permit for the same duration. Source: EDB (residency.mu)

Family members include, among others:

▸ Spouse (including common-law partner)
Parents
▸ Children, stepchildren and adopted children – in each case unmarried and not gainfully employed

The application for family members is processed by the Passport and Immigration Office.

What typically causes problems with family applications

In practice, it is rarely „big issues,“ but rather formal details: inconsistent spellings of names (e.g., umlauts, hyphenated names), certificates without a proper translation, missing or inconsistent proof of relationship, or documents that are available but not in the form that will later be accepted at the appointment. This is precisely why we maintain the documents in a clean structure from the beginning—so that the main application and the family application match up without friction.

Investing and Activities: What is Permitted in Retired Status

Retired status is a residence framework for retirement – no working title. Precisely why a clear separation is worthwhile here: investing yes, but employment exclusively through the appropriate permit route.

1) Investing yes – Employment no (in retired status)

As a retired non-citizen, you are allowed to invest in companies as long as you not employed are and from it no remuneration or monetary benefits obtain from employment.

2) Remote work: clarify upfront properly

If you continue for clients outside of Mauritius you work (remote work), it should In advance be neatly categorized. For remote work, there is a separate framework: You may not enter the Mauritian labor market, and Income source/Business stay outside from Mauritius (e.g., Premium Visa).

3) Working in Mauritius: only via a separate permit route

If you for consideration in Mauritius want to work, it usually goes not about the Retired Permit, but about a separate application (e.g., work permit / Occupation Permit), the on a case-by-case basis must be requested and approved.

4) Voluntary work: only with a clear prior classification

Voluntary activities should – if planned – in advance in writing classified so that there are no questions of interpretation later.

In the free initial consultation, we assess your case: what applies to you according to EDB guidelines, which points are critical, and which permit path makes strategic sense.

Real estate purchase as an option

Real estate purchase: when visa, bank, and structure have to align

As a foreigner, you can acquire real estate in Mauritius under certain government-regulated programs (e.g., PDS/RES/IRS/Smart City). What is crucial is not the brochure, but the structure: the acquisition route, banking procedures, and residency framework must fit together.

Real Estate Curator: precise pre-selection instead of viewing tourism

If real estate is part of your plan, I will curate a select few, reliable options for you, tailored to your residency framework, banking logic, and acquisition structure. No endless lists – just clear favorites including brief risk points (location, structure, developer, timing).

Pensions and taxes: a serious analysis

Important in advance: This page does not constitute tax advice. It gives you orientation on how the topic is generally classified in the context of Mauritius. You generally become a tax resident in Mauritius if you 183 days you are in the country or 270 days aggregated you achieve over the two preceding tax years. As a tax resident, foreign income – including pensions and similar income – is generally subject to tax. However, whether a specific pension from Germany/Austria/Switzerland is actually taxed in Mauritius depends on the respective double taxation treaty and the question of Transfer to Mauritius (Remittance) and should be examined on a case-by-case basis.

Why many applications do not fail – but still become expensive

Most applications are not „rejected.“ They become slow.
And „slow“ in practice means: additional coordination, queries, new translations, repeated documentation – in the worst case, further travel.

That is why we are consistently working EDB-oriented and conduct the process with a clear structure:

First, we classify your case and define the Verification strategyWhat means are presented in what form, which documents are crucial, and which sequence prevents subsequent loops.
After that, we structure the Document logic via NELS – clearly separated into Pre-AIP and Post-AIP, keeping deadlines, readability, and originals in mind.
And finally, we manage the implementation on-site: banking procedures, appointment preparation, medical health check – so that no questions of interpretation arise during the appointment.

We are not „just consulting.“ We have a team that operationally prepares applications. Two local staff members work daily with the procedures, formalities, and standard documentation practices; one of them is a law student. This ensures details are clarified early – not just at the end.

You will also find my interview with an EDB representative on this page: Mr. Sachin Mohabeer (Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Economic Development Board Mauritius – EDB). It shows how the process actually works, how the EDB operates, and what functions it has.

Curious about what life on Mauritius is really like?

Discretion is our standard

Documents for EDB applications are sensitive. That is why we do not send documents back and forth as email attachments. You upload your documents directly to our secure upload area – organized, traceable, and with clear access rights. Only the team actually working on your case will have access – without forwarding and without version chaos.

Free initial consultation – discrete

If Mauritius is a strategic move for you, 15 to 20 minutes are enough to clearly define the direction: Does the Retired Permit really fit your situation – and what is the correct sequence for proofs and documents.

Three short classification questions

1. Are you already 50+ – or will you reach it in the next 12 months?

2. Is the proof of financial means (USD 24,000/year or USD 2,000/month) freely available today – or is it tied to an intermediate step (e.g., sale, reallocation, payout)?

3. What timeframe is realistic?
0–3 months
3 to 6 months
6–12 months
still open (for guidance only)

FAQ – Retired Person Visa Mauritius 2026

Frequently Asked Questions (EDB-oriented, with our guidance)

We first check if you are 50+ and whether your financial proof can be presented in an EDB-compliant manner: either at least USD 24,000 or a guaranteed income of USD 2,000 per month. After that, we structure the application so that evidence, deadlines, and originals match the EDB logic.

The EDB logic is clear: USD 24,000 per year or USD 2,000 per month. For the renewal, the availability of USD 24,000 annually in the local bank account also plays a role. We will determine with you which form of proof is the cleanest for your case – and in what order they should be submitted.

We will start the process for you online via NELS up to the Approval in Principle (AIP). For the final phase, an in-person appointment is usually required where the originals must be presented. We will prepare this in such a way that there are no questions of interpretation during the appointment.

We will guide you through the Pre-AIP and Post-AIP document logic. Typical documents include: birth certificate, passport, police clearance certificate (last 10 years, deadline), proof of capital, passport photos, and signed declarations. After AIP, bank statements in Mauritius and the medical health check are added, among others. Critical aspects are almost always: deadlines, translations, legibility, and the proper preparation of the originals.

The Retired Non-Citizen Permit is generally valid for 10 years and can be extended for another 10 years if the conditions continue to be met. We structure the process so that you already factor in the extension logic (particularly regarding funds and banking issues) during the initial procedure.

Yes. Family members can – under certain conditions – apply for a residence permit for the same duration. This includes, in particular, spouses or registered partners, parents, and children (each in accordance with EDB framework conditions). We will review with you what can be properly mapped out in your case regarding family reunification and how the documents should be managed.

Investing is possible as long as you are not employed by the invested company and do not receive any compensation or monetary benefits from employment.

If you want to work for remuneration in Mauritius, a separate permit route is generally required (case-by-case review).

If you work remotely for clients outside of Mauritius, this should be properly categorized in advance; there is a specific framework for this (Premium Visa). We will categorize it this way in your case so that there are no questions of interpretation later.

The statutory fees are USD 1,000 (permit fee). In addition, since December 1, 2025, a USD 50 application fee (non-refundable) applies to residence permit applications. Further costs may arise depending on the specific case (e.g., translations, medical health check, bank fees, logistics). During the initial consultation, we will tell you which cost components are realistic in your case—without speculation.

Generally, you become a tax resident with a 183-day stay or 270 days aggregated over the two preceding tax years. We provide this as guidance, but it does not replace an individual tax assessment.

That depends on the double taxation agreement, your specific type of pension, and the question of the transfer to Mauritius (remittance). During the initial consultation, we will structure the crucial questions that your tax advisor needs to answer—so that you can make a reliable decision.
